Sharps Injury Prevention
Sharps Injury Prevention concentration is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge, skills and abilities for their participation in the battle to prevent needle sticks and other sharps injuries and their subsequent risk to bloodborne infections. Efforts to prevent sharps injuries have proven complicated as evidenced by the approximately 600,000 to 800,000 needle sticks and other percutaneous injuries that continue to occur annually among healthcare workers across the continuum of care (hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, emergency care services, and private homes). Specifically, participants will gain the following competencies: 1. Collect and analyze data on sharps injuries 2. Interpret regulatory requirements related to sharps injury prevention 3. Implement a comprehensive sharps injury prevention program 4. Evaluate engineered sharps injury prevention devices 5. Recognize the medical, psychosocial and legal ramifications of sharps injuries.
